Capturing Data from Objects in the Real World and Making Them Digital

Laser Scanning Now @ DSC

We are now offering 3D Laser Scanning as part of our construction services!

Laser scanning is a method of high-accuracy mapping that uses laser beams to quickly capture the details of an entire construction jobsite – much like a camera taking a 360-degree photo.

It then can reconstruct a CAD reference file for reverse engineering or rapid prototyping, with data so complete it has the details all the way down to the bolt patterns on steel pipe fittings.

How is it Used in Construction?

Already making a difference on our jobsites and projects, these scans are helping our clients have complete documentation of existing as-built facilities and records of what is behind the walls, above the ceilings, and under the floor slabs.

  • Onsite 3D scanning can be taken anywhere and conveniently, at any time. It is virtually unlimited in size and environment including broad daylight, the dark of night, indoors, and outdoors.
  • 3D scanning is critical in prefabrication work. Since scanning can be completed in highly congested areas with exact measurements of existing piping and electrical, the data will allow for prefabrication manufacturing offsite, limiting disruption to the facility.
  • For renovations or any construction project that lacks accurate existing conditions documentation, the laser scan data can be converted into models to provide the missing information, allowing designers to start their design with accurate drawings instead of estimations. This can help the project start sooner, have less change orders, and stay on schedule.

Cost & Time Savings

Using the 3D Laser Scanner on a jobsite not only benefits the client, but helps streamline our job as well, reducing rework and schedule disruptions. It reduces the need for other parties on a project (i.e., architects, engineers, surveyors, etc.) to make multiple trips out to the site to verify plans and helps improve coordination and collaboration on the jobsite, which leads to faster and better overall decision-making.
